O impacto do
abastecimento alimentar urbano causa externalidades negativas relacionadas
recursos, conservar a biodiversidade e promover a vitalidade económica e social
More than half of the world's population lives in cities. The impact of urban food supply causes negative externalities related to the processes of producing, processing, storing and transporting food, which is why the FAO and various governments are seeking to promote sustainable local consumption models. Urban agriculture is a tool for implementing local supply models that complement more classic supply models. Having a deeper understanding of some aspects of urban agriculture, such as the motivations for engaging in these activities, can be useful in planning community development strategies based on urban gardens. In the context of Lisbon, urban agriculture is historically very present and important. Different forms of urban agriculture are present in the Portuguese capital, which makes it a partially representative universe of the various forms this activity can take. This dissertation seeks to analyse the impact that urban agriculture has on the lives of people in vulnerable conditions, from both a symbolic-emotional and material point of view. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews carried out in an urban garden, the Parque Agrícola da Alta de Lisboa. The data shows that urban agriculture is a multifunctional activity which, as well as producing food, can change the landscape, contribute to sustainable resource management, conserve biodiversity and promote the economic and social vitality of the areas in which it operates. The people interviewed reported the benefits of urban agriculture in improving the quality of their lives, materially, emotionally, relationally, socially and environmentally, also involving the different dimensions of health.
