Trabalho realizado como comentário ao processo de tradução de que resulta, o presente relatório constitui uma reflexão sobre o ato de tradução da obra Sula, de Toni Morrison, para Português Europeu.
Ao ter como questões de fundo a variação linguística, a literatura e, incontornavelmente, a tradução, a transposição e a recriação das características que marcam o discurso padrão e não padrão das personagens no texto de partida são aspetos centrais debatidos ao longo do presente relatório. Deste modo, do uso do Inglês Padrão e do African American English, no original, ao Português Europeu e a algumas características inspiradas no Português de Angola, na tradução, os paradigmas tradutórios adotados ao longo do tempo e os usos sociolinguísticos de uma língua ou de variedades de uma mesma língua são também alguns dos temas tratados.
Assim, como forma de refletir estes aspetos na proposta de tradução, a compensação, estratégia de tradução adotada, enquadra-se numa perspetiva estrangeirizante à tradução, e é analisada, num primeiro momento, de um ponto de vista teórico, servindo, depois, num último momento, de ponto de partida para a análise dos resultados do processo de tradução, o qual teve sempre como principal objetivo a fidelidade para com o estilo de Morrison e o valor literário do romance Sula.
A work carried out as a comment on the translation process from which it results, this essay is a reflection on the translation of Toni Morrison's Sula into Portuguese. Having language variation, literature and, inevitably, translation, in their background, the transposition and recreation of features, that mark the characters's standard speech and nonstandard speech in the source text, are fundamental issues discussed throughout this essay. This way, from the usage of Standard English and African American English in the original text, to European Portuguese, and the use of some features inspired by Angolan Portuguese in the translation, the translation paradigms adopted over time and the sociolinguistic uses of a language or of a variety of a same language are also some of the subjects addressed in the essay. Therefore, as a way of reflecting these issues in the translation proposal, compensation - the adopted translation strategy - fits into a foreignizing perspective on translation, which is initially analyzed from a theoretical standpoint, working afterwards as the starting point for the translation process result's analysis, thus being faithfulness to Morrison's style and Sula's literary value the primary focus of the abovementioned translation process.
