O artigo centra-se na condição de analfabeto e nos cursos de alfabetização de adultos, a partir da perspectiva de adultos analfabetos. Os dados empíricos resultaram de uma investigação de natureza qualitativa, com recurso a entrevistas biográficas a nove adultos analfabetos, residentes no contexto rural, em Portugal. A entrevista biográfica incidiu sobre o percurso de vida e o processo de formação dos adultos. Apresentam-se contributos teóricos sobre o analfabetismo e a alfabetização. Os adultos reconhecem que a sua condição de analfabeto resultou de dificuldades financeiras da família, conside-ram que o fato de não saberem ler nem escrever limitou as suas oportunidades, ao longo da vida, e são críticos sobre os cursos de alfabetização de adultos.
The article presents an illiteracy analysis and adult literacy courses, through illiterate adult’s pers-pective. The empirical data are the result of an investigation of a qualitative nature, using biogra-phical interviews with nine illiterate adults, living in the rural context, in Portugal. The biogra-phical interview focused on their life course and the learning process. Theoretical contributions on illiteracy and literacy are presented. The adults acknowledge that their status as illiterate resulted from family financial difficulties, find that being unable to read or write has limited their opportuni-ties throughout life, and they criticize the adult literacy courses.
