Emotional design seeks to influence users’ emotions, affecting decisions, behaviours, and experiences. In the context of learning, it can impact factors such as motivation, knowledge retention, and student satisfaction. Accordingly, the present study aims to understand the role of emotional design in online courses from the perspective of instructional designers. To this end, a qualitative methodology was adopted, using semi-structured interviews based on four research questions focused on challenges, key elements, strategies, and evaluation. The interviewees recognise the importance of emotional design, linking it to theoretical foundations and highlighting elements such as storytelling and the personalisation of the learning experience. However, they also point to challenges in its implementation, particularly in understanding learners’ needs, adapting content, and evaluating its impact. Regarding the integration of emotional design strategies, the designers believe that these should be incorporated with the aim of fostering an effective and relevant learning experience. The findings suggest that emotional design can significantly contribute to a more positive learning process. Nevertheless, certain limitations were noted, along with the need for further research to deepen the practical application of this concept.
