Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the main causes of hepatic cirrhosis as well as of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in European countries, Portugal included. The main transmission route is sharing of injectable devices between intravenous drug users. With the purpose of getting to know better this population, I followed the activity of Associação Ares do Pinhal in several areas within Lisbon, all along 2018. Based on my contact with reality and on the clinical case of a mobile unit user, the present work is intent on characterizing the patients with addictive behaviours, bringing to light the barriers that dissuade their access to health services and discussing a few HCV elimination strategies aimed at this risk group.
