Introduction The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of frailty in the portuguese elderly population and to analyse the behaviour of the frailty dimensions during 3 months of follow-up Methods The sample was composed by 267 participants. The frailty assessment was performed from Fried’s phenotype, which uses the indicator of weight loss, exhaustion, physical activity, gate speed and weakness. The statistical analysis of the data was performed from chi-square, comparing the initial and follow-up evaluations, performed with 3 months of follow-up. Results Participants had an average age of 77,38 ±7,8 years, of which 67,8% were women and 32,2% were men. Statistically significant difference were found in all items of assessment of the phenotype of frailty: weight loss (=48,987; p<0,001), Exhaustion (=6,526, p<0,001), Physical activity (=64,380, p<0,001), Weakness (=105,811, p<0,001), Gate Speed (=107,409, p<0,001) and also Frailty (=98,964, p<0,001) Conclusion Fried’s phenotype proved to be a good instrument to assess the prevalence of frailty in the portuguese population, showing significant relation in all domains of frailty and frailty itself, between the initial evaluation and the follow-up.
