O presente estudo pretende explorar o papel do
Recent studies have been showing that concepts of Social Psychology ordinarily used in explaining intergroup phenomena can be applied in comprehending place identity. In these sense, the social identity perspective allows the consideration of place as a social category by which individuals organize the information about its residents. The way in which the features of a neighbourhood and its residents are perceived have implications in the inference process and judgements that others make about the residents, being expressed also in the way residents from different neighbourhoods connect. Besides social groups, also places, namely neighbourhoods differ in the entitativity continuum and in the prestige continuum. The present study intends to explore the role of prestige as a mediator of the perception of entitativity and place identity connection. The study took place in four neighbourhoods of the city of Torres Vedras that vary in entitativity and prestige. The sample included residents of the four neighbourhoods, attaining a total of 118 participants. The results show that in all neighbourhoods the place identity is positive apart from the level of prestige or entitativity. Prestige seems to have an essential role in intergroup differentiation, where the residents of the neighbourhoods with high prestige make use of this quality to separate themselves from the residents of low prestige neighbourhoods.
