This Master’s thesis aims to analyse the functioning of the Great National Subscription for the Defence of the Country, an organisation founded after the British Ultimatum of 1890, with its primary objective being fundraising for improvements in Portuguese National Defence. Firstly, it will be addressed the motives that led to the foundation of the National Subscription: the Luso-British conflict and the nationalistic/patriotic sentiment that it generated, as a catalysing agent for this movement and the ideological thinking associated with it. Following this introduction, the focus shifts to the internal organisation of the Subscription, on how its Grand Committee and Executive Committee functioned, their internal divides and how they interacted with the society they were inserted into. As such, it will be probed the systems used to acquire capital during the fundraising phase of their work. In a second part, my focus will turn to their end-goal, the internal debates on how to invest, and the methods utilised to achieve their ambitions.
