Woman and child: The singular testimony of a Punic tomb in the necropolis of Monte Sirai (Carbonia-Sardinia, Italy)
Publication . Piga, Giampaolo; Pla Orquín, Rosana; Guirguis, Michele; Gonçalves, David; Pimenta, Carlos; Tereso, João; Brunetti, Antonio
In this paper we present a case of a double burial (T.310/326) from the Phoenician Punic necropolis of Monte Sirai (Carbonia, Sardinia, Italy). This peculiar tomb, which comprises the inhumation of a woman, presents unique constructive features, namely a big stone cover that confers a high visual reference to the necropolis. Furthermore, a cooking pot with two handles was laid on the tibias during the final closure of the tomb which included remains from at least three birds of the Turdidae family. Strikingly, these remains were mixed with those from a perinatal infant who could possibly constitute the progeny of the woman buried in the tomb. The combined XRD/FT-IR analysis showed that the infant remains underwent intense heat treatment, while the adult and bird remains remained unburned. This urned infant burial involving perinatal and animal remains has close analogies with practices of infant depositions in the contemporaneous Phoenician and Punic tophet sanctuaries of the central Mediterranean.
Roman and medieval crops in the Iberian Peninsula: A first overview of seeds and fruits from archaeological sites
Publication . Peña-Chocarro, Leonor; Pérez-Jordà, Guillem; Alonso, Natàlia; Antolín, Ferran; Teira-Brión, Andrés; Tereso, João Pedro; Montes Moya, Eva María; López Reyes, Daniel
This paper presents an overview of the current state of research on Roman, Late Antique and medieval agriculture in the Iberian Peninsula through the study of archaeobotanical samples (seeds and fruits) collected on a large number of rural and urban sites spread throughout Iberia's geography. It includes published and unpublished data. The plant taxa of economic interest are grouped into various categories: cereals, cereal chaff, legumes, domesticated fruits, oil/fibre plants, condiments and spices, and wild species. According to the data, naked wheats and hulled barley are the dominant cereal species throughout the Iberian Peninsula. There are, nonetheless, particularities like the prevalence of hulled wheats (mainly emmer and spelt) in the North-west. Cultivated fruits also show a great diversity, and new species such as Morus nigra or Prunus armeniaca appear for the first time in the archaeobotanical record. There are also novelties regarding herbs and spices.
Early-Middle Bronze Age communities and wood resources management in northeast Portugal: The Sabor valley
Publication . Martín-Seijo, María; Tereso, João Pedro; Vaz, Filipe Costa; Gaspar, Rita; Rodríguez Rellán, Carlos
This paper focuses on the relationship between human communities and wood resources in the Sabor valley (Trás-os-Montes region, northeast Portugal) during the Early and Middle Bronze Age. Charcoal from three archaeological sitesdTerraço das Laranjeiras, Foz do Medal and Quinta de Crestelosdwas analysed. As in other Early-Middle Bronze Age sites inWestern Iberia, the majority of the samples were recovered from pits, which complicates charcoal debris interpretation. The charcoal analysis suggests that the formation processes of the archaeobotanical record involved both natural and anthropic factors.
The charcoal assemblages studied showed that taxonomic variability was strongly conditioned by the number of fragments produced per feature. Hearths, pits and post-holes provided information about the consumption of wood resources, highlighting the importance of taxa such as Fraxinus sp. and Quercus spp. combined with shrubby species including small trees (Juniperus sp., Arbutus unedo, Fabaceae, Cistus sp. and Erica spp.) and attesting the presence of Olea europaea within Middle Bronze Age contexts.
