  • History and significance of the Franz Cižek Legacy
    Publication . Laven, Rolf
The Franz Čižek Legacy is a collection of artworks created by children who participated in the Viennese Juvenile Art Class, which was initiated by the artist and educator Franz Čižek (1865–1946), in the early 20th century. The legacy is significant in the history of art education, as it represents an innovative approach to teaching art to children. Čižek believed that children should be given the freedom to express themselves artistically, and he encouraged them to explore their own creativity. The Viennese Juvenile Art Class was influential in the field of art education and inspired similar initiatives in other parts of the world. Its relevance was recognised by the international community in this field and it is still considered a pioneering initiative that had an important impact on the reform of art education. Unfortunately, the receptiveness of the Viennese Juvenile Art Class was interrupted by the political circumstances of the time, including Austrofascism and National Socialism, and its attitude was partly forgotten. However, the Franz Čižek Legacy has been preserved and is now part of the holdings of the Wien Museum, in Vienna. The legacy remains significant today as a reminder of the importance of giving children the freedom to express themselves creatively and the value of innovative approaches to teaching art. It continues to inspire educators and artists around the world and serves as a testament to the lasting impact of Franz Čižek’s visionary approach to art education.
