- The interrelatedness of organizational ambidexterity, dynamic capabilities and open innovation : a conceptual model towards a competitive advantagePublication . van Lieshout, Johannes W.F.C.; van der Velden, Jeroen M.; Blomme, Robert J.; Peters, PascalePurpose – Establishing a competitive advantage in today’s dynamic environment involves optimizing an organization’s exploration and exploitation strategy. This paper aims to explore how an open innovation strategy complements the organization’s ambidextrous strategy in attaining a competitive advantage. Organizational ambidexterity and dynamic capability theories are also explored to investigate the impact of open innovation on the organization’s ambidextrous strategy and competitive advantage – especially inbound and outbound open innovation. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conducted a systematic literature review using Boolean search techniques, which was focused on the research fields of the sub-areas of general management, strategy, innovation, organization studies, information management, entrepreneurship, international business, marketing, and economics, supplemented by the snowball technique. Findings – Organizations that combine their ambidextrous strategy with open innovation attributes achieve a competitive advantage through developing their dynamic capabilities by which organizations change their value proposition. This study also shows that an ambidextrous strategy should no longer be viewed as a structural solution implemented by management, but also as a bottom-up intervention. Additionally, the authors found that the organization’s dynamic capabilities establish a feedback loop, which changes the organization’s ambidextrous strategy to resolve the efficiency–agility paradox. Originality/value – Previous research has focused on strategic orientation; however, hardly any research has investigated how the interrelatedness of open innovation, organizational ambidexterity and dynamic capabilities support a competitive advantage. The authors present a conceptual model that inspires new research avenues
- The impact of Industry 4.0 on organizational performance : the case of Pakistan’s retail industryPublication . Ali, Shahbaz; Xie, YongpingPurpose – The purpose of this paper was to assess and determine the impact of the five core technologies of Industry 4.0 (3D Printing, Big Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things (IoT) and Robotics) on the organizational performance of the retail industry in the context of Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach – Pakistan’s retail industry was chosen as the target sector, and the target population was composed of senior-level employees, including managers from first-level positions to top-level positions, as well as subordinate employees working under the supervision of first-level managers, possessing the technological know-how of Industry 4.0. The data were collected through a matrix-based survey questionnaire that was based on a five-point Likert scale, ranging from “strongly agree” to “strongly disagree.” The process of data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics. Findings – The findings obtained by this research work showed a significant relationship among the five core pillars of Industry 4.0 and the organizational performance of Pakistan’s retail industry. Besides, the obtained findings provided preliminary evidence that Industry 4.0’s disruptive technologies, particularly, 3D printing, big data analytics, cloud computing, IoT and robotics, could help Pakistan’s retail industry solve various problems and challenges, such as meager revenues, increased expenses and unorganized systems. Originality/value – The present study extended the theoretical body of knowledge through studying and examining Industry 4.0’s five crucial factors that significantly contribute to the service sector, particularly, the retail industry, of the big emerging markets (BEM) economies, including Pakistan.
- Banks’ support for the development of internationalization in Brazil : a perspective from Brazilian export companiesPublication . Mataveli, Mara; Ayala, Juan Carlos; Gil, Alfonso J.Purpose – Banks play a crucial role in the sustainable development of exports as they finance much of the trade. Additionally, in Brazil’s case, banks provide exporting companies with advisory and training services, which facilitate the internationalization process. This work aims to analyze the role of public and private banks in the export process of companies in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach – Interviews are conducted with a sample of 318 Brazilian exporting companies. Two research questions are posed: What type of export services do companies use from public and private banks in Brazil? Is exporting companies’ access to credit, as a type of banking service, related to their size or export experience? A descriptive study of the functions of public and private banks in helping Brazilian exports is presented. Hypotheses are proposed regarding companies’ access to credit and its relationship with their size and export experience. Findings – It is found that public and private banks in Brazil provide exporting companies with banking services, other services related to technical aspects, and export consulting. There are significant differences in access to credit in both public and private banks, depending on the exporting company’s size. Originality/value – This work contributes to the internationalization literature on the role of banks in supporting exports in an emerging country like Brazil.
- Work–life balance, retention of professionals and psychological empowerment : an empirical validationPublication . Panda, Ansumalini; Sahoo, Chandan KumarPurpose – This study aims to explore the relationship between work–life balance and employee retention by examining the mediating role of psychological empowerment among software firms based in India. Design/methodology/approach – The study collected 283 responses by using a structured questionnaire and interview method. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to validate the hypothesized research model for examining the consistency and sturdiness of the study variables by applying AMOS 20. Findings – The result reveals that psychological empowerment partially mediates the relationship between work–life balance and the retention of professionals. This indicates that a high degree of psychological empowerment strengthens the relations between work–life balance and the retention of professionals. Research limitations/implications – The research outlined a best-fit model of psychological empowerment as a partial mediator among work–life balance and the retention of professionals. The study presents a set of sensible and practical aspects where work–life balance and retention of professionals can aid in developing and generating commitment to the organization which could offer new insights for software professionals, managers and practitioners. Originality/value – This study emphasized that psychological empowerment helps in enhancing dedication, loyalty, integrity, allegiance and trustworthiness among employees, thus playing a role between work–life balance and the retention of professionals.
