- Examining the effects of strategic orientation and motivation on performance and innovation in the production sector of automobile spare partsPublication . Adiguzel, ZaferPurpose – The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between innovative climate, strategic orientation, work motivation, business performance and job performance. Design/methodology/approach – Within the scope of the research, a survey was conducted with 400 engineers working in organizations operating within companies producing spare parts for automobile companies. IBM SPSS 25, IBM SPSS AMOS and LISREL programs were gradually used, and the data obtained were evaluated and analyzed. Findings – The importance of strategic orientation and work motivation for organizations can be seen in the analysis results in terms of their positive effects. Practical implications – In the production sector, where innovation and competition activities take place, not only strategic decisions but also motivation for employees must be realized within the organizational culture in order for the organizations to be successful. Strategic orientation is effective in achieving innovation and creation to the extent that employees are motivated. Originality/value – In terms of successful performance, it is very important to manage companies with the right strategic understanding and to involve the employees. In order to realize the innovation climate and to be successful in performance criteria, motivation is considered a key factor, in particular for the automobile sector. Automobile companies are now turning to electric vehicle production using new generation technologies. However, they also attach importance to the use of smart technologies in cars. For this reason, the effects of strategic orientation and work motivation on performance and innovation are investigated in companies producing automobile spare parts.
- Inclusive sustainable business practices in supporting dairy supply chainsPublication . Ciubotaru, MarcelaPurpose – Food supply chains are facing significant changes and challenges coming from the need to adopt inclusive business practices and foster sustainable development. The current research aims to provide insights related to the inclusiveness of sustainable business practices of a dairy production co-operative where the smallholders are engaging with a traditional business mind-set. The purpose of the research is to deliver insights about the linkages between accounting and business practices in the adoption of an inclusive business model. Design/methodology/approach – This research is based on the qualitative case study of a medium-sized production cooperative company operating in the dairy industry supply chain. Findings – This study answers the call for research on accounting and control systems in the food sector, by exploring how management and control system is practised within contemporary supply chains. The research aims to analyse the contextual insights of managerial and organizational practices that facilitate interorganizational relationships and coordination among actors that engage along the supply chain. Research limitations/implications – The main limitation relates to the conditions of the time available and the limited number of interviews. Even if key actors were interviewed, a larger sample would have been more beneficial to the research. However, the lack of proper results for accounting tools and software access caused some loss to the research. Originality/value – This paper emphasizes the effects of the “inclusiveness” of the sustainable business models between suppliers and leading companies by enhancing the sustainable business development within the supply chain, as part of a wider business model in the food sector from an inter-organizational perspective.
- An empirical examination on the links of cross-functional integration of productionmarketing, BTO competitiveness and performancePublication . Chen, ZhixiangPurpose – This paper is to explore how cross-functional integration (CFI) of production-marketing can impact the firm’s build-to-order (BTO) competitiveness, marketing performance (MP) and financial performance (FP). Design/methodology/approach – Empirical study with the structural equation modeling approach is applied. Six hypotheses are constructed and tested based on survey data collected from Chinese manufacturing firms. Findings – The survey data supports that production-marketing integration (PMI) improves BTO competitiveness (BTOC) and MP and that BTOC also positively affects marketing outcome which, in turn, impacts a firm’s FP. The results reveal that CFI of production-marketing is an effective approach for achieving the BTO manufacturing strategy and can improve organizational performance. Originality/value – The paper uncovers the role of CFI of production-marketing in BTO manufacturing strategy and its impacts on a firm’s MP and FP and provides important managerial implications for practitioners to improve organizational time-based competitiveness and performance in today’s time-based competition era.
- The relationship between distinctive capabilities system, learning orientation, leadership and performancePublication . Arraya, MarcoPurpose – This paper conceptualised the distinctive capabilities system and tested its relationship between small and medium enterprise (SME) non-financial and financial performance, encompassing leadership and learning orientation as mediators, moderators and moderators’ mediators. Design/methodology/approach – The research design is exploratory, quantitative and cross-sectional. The study employed partial least squares path modelling for testing the direct, mediation and moderation effects, and, for testing moderated mediation, the author adopted PROCESS analysis. Before testing the hypotheses, a confirmatory factor analysis procedure was applied to the measurement model validity test. Findings – Our empirical findings confirm that (1) learning orientation has a positive and significant implication as a moderator between the distinctive capabilities system and SME performance; (2) the distinctive capabilities system has a significant relationship with leadership and learning orientation, and leadership has a significant relationship with learning orientation and (3) the distinctive capabilities system has no direct impact on performance. These findings suggest that, by nature, the distinctive capabilities system has an indirect impact on SME performance, which must be understood as a consequence of living “far-fromequilibrium” and being forced to learn and adapt to come up with better market configurations. Originality/value – This study intends to contribute to the existing literature in three ways: (1) it proposes the distinctive capabilities system definition; (2) it highlights the system’s features and benefits that make it a core construct for SMEs surviving and thriving and (3) it shows the causal relationship between the leadership capability and learning orientation and the distinctive capabilities system and performance.
- The role of market competition for knowledge competencies,R&Dand innovation : an empirical analysis for German firmsPublication . Basit, Shoaib Abdul; Kuhn, Thomas; Cantner, UwePurpose – Knowledge competencies and (R&D) activities are one of the most important sources of innovation and have been widely discussed in the literature. In comparison, the role of the competitive environment for the innovation activities of firms is still open to debate and has not been fully understood yet. Therefore, this paper intends to provide new evidence on the interaction between knowledge competencies and R&D activities of firms on the one side and their competitiveness in the market environment on the other. In particular, the moderating function of market competition is explored. In this respect, the analysis covers the main innovation types as well as both sectors, manufacturing and services. Design/methodology/approach – The empirical analysis is based on a three years panel dataset of German manufacturing and service firms obtained from Mannheim Innovation Panel (MIP) and Community Innovation Surveys (CISs: 2011, 2013 and 2015). For the estimation, a binary instrumental variable treatment model with Heckman selection method is used. Also, it provides a suitable approach to estimating the binary variables in order to cope with endogeneity concerns. Findings – The estimation results show thatR&D activities and knowledge competencies are positively related to innovation activities of different types conditioned on firms’ specific perception of their competitive environment, in terms of outdated products/services as well as strong competition from abroad. Most importantly, the results from the moderation estimation reveal that there is a significant difference between the manufacturing and service sector. Service firms engage more in internal R&D activities on generating product innovations while the manufacturing firms conduct more external R&D on specific types of innovation. Further, the authors find that strong competition from abroad positively and significantly reinforces the effect of knowledge competencies on innovation activities for more types in services than in manufacturing. In contrast, outdated products and services tend to decline the effect of knowledge competencies for some innovation types in both sectors. The authors also observe a positive and significant reinforcement effect on knowledge competencies. However, it is found more beneficial for service firms since they can employ more innovation strategies. Originality/value – The focus of the study is mainly on the impact of firms’ competitive environment on innovation activities in various types through its interaction with knowledge competencies andR&D activities, across manufacturing and service firms.
