- Aristides de Sousa Mendes: razões de humanidade: projeto expositivo itinerantePublication . Reis, Pedro Miguel Teixeira Braga dos; Garrett Pinho, ElsaOn March 24th, 2022, the exhibition Aristides de Sousa Mendes: Reasons of Humanity opened at the premises of the General Secretary of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (SGPCM), and addressed the disciplinary lawsuit brought against Aristides de Sousa Mendes by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1940. The exhibition was the result of a partnership protocol between the SGPCM, which promoted and ensured the general coordination of the project, and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL), which ensured its planning and implementation. The planning of the exhibition was limited by its specificities: on the one hand, the approach and presentation to the public of a complex theme - the question of obedience to service as opposed to conflicts of moral conscience, based on the biographical path and action of a personality; on the other hand, a series of constraints established beforehand- it was intended to be a documentary-based exhibition, historical, in dialogue with elements of contemporary art, designed for traveling, and integrated into a non-exhibitive space. Hence, the challenge that was the outlining of its exhibition design plan. This paper addresses the development of the exhibition plan for the exhibition Aristides de Sousa Mendes: Reasons of Humanity, from the first meetings where its objectives and narrative line were established, to its opening to the public. Throughout three chapters, we present: 1) the theme of the exhibition, through a biographical note on Aristides de Sousa Mendes; 2) the development of the exhibition project, where communication design played a special role as a vehicle for the establishment of an effective visual identity that brought together the various elements of communication related to the exhibition narrative. Four intersecting elements were highlighted (the sign, the font, the word and the color), and each planning phase was addressed up to the final exhibition design (considering elements such as the spatial modelling and route; the equipment and exhibition design supports; the visual composition of the contents). In this context, we explored the idea of module as an enabling model for equipment design approaches capable of fast and protocoled reproduction, allowing the effective systematization of form and its coherent application in space; 3) the description of the materialization of the exhibition in terms of production, assembly and itinerancy, highlighting the material and monetary economy through the systematization and planning of operations, and reaffirming the importance of the advanced planning.
- Populist Things. A Study on the Materiality of Political IdeasPublication . Silva, Filipe Carreira da; Rogenhofer, JuliusIs there such thing as a populist thing? This article tries to answer this question by comparing two iconic populist objects: the Make America Great Again (MAGA) cap and the yellow vest. Despite their centrality to populist politics, there is remarkably little systematic examination of these objects’ populist affordances, let alone a comparative study. We propose to address this lacuna by performing a pragmatic analysis of each object’s role in the populist politics of the United States and France, respectively. Our comparison uncovers two findings, which, in turn, help us answer our research question. First, our study of the MAGA cap reveals how nationalism and populism can be combined into a powerful political message. Second, the yellow vest exemplifies how populism functions on its own i.e., as a way of doing politics that is centred on feelings of resentment. Either in conjunction with other political phenomena (e.g., nationalism) or by itself, populism emerges from our analysis as a logic of action that involves both linguistic claims and physical objects. Things, in this reading, are surprisingly central to how populism operates.
- Examining the Contribution of Physical Cues for Same- and Cross-Race Face IndividuationPublication . Correll, Joshua; Ma, Debbie; Kenny, David A.; Palma, TomásFace individuation involves sensitivity to physical characteristics that provide information about identity. We examined whether Black and White American faces differ in terms of individuating information, and whether Black and White perceivers differentially weight information when judging same-race and cross-race faces. Study 1 analyzed 20 structural metrics (e.g., eye width, nose length) of 158 Black and White faces to determine which differentiate faces within each group. High-utility metrics (e.g., nose length, eye height, chin length) differentiated faces of both groups, low-utility metrics (e.g., face width, eye width, face length) offered less individuating information. Study 2 (N = 4,510) explored Black and White participants’ sensitivity to variation on structural metrics using similarity ratings. High-utility metrics affected perceived dissimilarity more than low-utility metrics. This relationship was non-significantly stronger for same-race faces rather than cross-race faces. Perceivers also relied more on features that were racially stereotypic of the faces they were rating.
Abreu, Mariana Ribeiro; Garrett Pinho, ElsaThis internship report, carried out in the context of the master’s degree in Museology and Museography, aims to describe the work developed by the author at the Museu Nacional do Azulejo between October of 2021 and July 2022. The objective of this stage was the organization of several containers of tiles belonging to the "Old Fund" of MNAz, followed by the study of two sets of tile panels of the eighteenth century. It was intended to determine data that could be significant, regarding their production, provenance, and style, in order to contribute to future studies. The report is divided into three chapters. The first concerns a historical approach and the functioning of the institution, considering aspects such as the passage from convent to museum, but also addressing its collections and its exhibition path. The second chapter corresponds to the report of practical activities, that is, all activities that were developed during the practical internship at MNAz. Thus, the first contact with the containers is mentioned, emphasizing the methodologies. The third chapter concerns the analysis of the two sets of panels of the “Old Fund” of the MNAz, seeking to explain their stylistic and historical characteristics, and addressing issues due to its state of conservation. The fourth and final chapter presents some considerations regarding the role of reconstructions in safeguarding the tile heritage, materializing this aspect with and exhibition proposal.
