- The gods of the gentiles are demonsPublication . Pina-Cabral, JoaoSince the Christianisation of Portugal fourteen centuries ago, there has been a surprising similarity in the areas the Church has found people falling into error. This paper argues that this long term continuity cannot be explained by one single factor.

- Economic growth, human capital formation and consumption in Western EuropePublication . Reis, JaimeThis chapter focuses on three aspects of pre-industrial European economic history and the possible relationships between them. The first, based on a growing body of recent studies, concerns the long-term growth experienced by the European economy over the two and a half centuries prior to the Industrial Revolution, or, at least, by important parts of it. It was an unequal process, in terms of time and space, which had as one of its consequences the emergence, by the eighteenth century, of significant differences of income per capita that may have helped to shape the course of industrialization over the next century or so. The second is a correlate of the first and refers to the probable rise in the standard of living over the same period. Once again, it was an uneven evolution, with a very diverse impact on social groups, gender, and the rural/urban divide, as well as on nations and the regions within them. The third aspect has to do with the remarkable increase in human capital that accompanied these other two processes and, especially, the unprecedented rise in literacy that was a part of it. This too was hardly a homogeneous or linear development, either spatially or temporally, and its causes and consequences have yet to be clearly understood.
- A União da República de Timor : o atrófico movimento nacionalista islâmico-malaio timorense, 1960-1975Publication . Fernandes, Moisés Silva
- Fatherhood, Family and Work in Men's lives: negotiating new and old masculinitiesPublication . Wall, Karin; Aboim, Sofia; Marinho, SofiaThe main aim of this article is to understand how men living in couples with young children construct their roles and identities as fathers in the context of different types of family functioning. To explore this issue, our analytical framework examines the dynamics of fathering and of family functioning, thereby focusing on the interrelationships between men as fathers, partners and breadwinners. Drawing on data from a qualitative study carried out in 2005-2006 in Portugal, the article shows a diversity of fatherhood patterns. Joint and supportive fatherhood emerge within the framework of fusional dynamics, while disengaged fatherhood is connected to gender-differentiated autonomy. Four other patterns were found to be linked to the various forms of the modern “associative” family identified in this study. Equal fatherhood emerges in couples whose practices closely match the ideals of gender equality and individual autonomy, whereas appropriative, time-condensed and stay-at-home patterns of fatherhood are connected to different forms of “gender unequal” associative couples.
