- Adopção de protecção integrada em tabaco armazenado em PortugalPublication . Mexia, António; Carvalho, M.O.; Pereira, A.P.Lasioderma serricorne (F.) and Ephestia elutella (Hb.) are the most serious pests of stored tobacco. Mainly are the larvae that feed on the product, may contaminate it with their excreta and cause damage on tobacco and allergic responses. The present work evaluated cigarette beetles and tobacco moths’ populations from the tobacco fields to the processing factories in Portugal using pheromone traps. Density, dispersion, risk assessment and the efficacy of making decisions based on economic thresholds were evaluated. For L. serricorne, the efficacy of mass-trapping using pheromone traps was studied. Sequential sampling for risk assessment was developed for processed tobacco and in a cigarette factory. These studies pretended to contribute for the integrated pest management of stored tobacco and also for the stored products in general, as the methodologies applied, with some adaptations, can be used for other pests and stored products.
- An Overview of the Mechanisms Involved in Coffee-Hemileia vastatrix Interactions: Plant and Pathogen PerspectivesPublication . Silva, M.C.; Guerra-Guimarães, Leonor; Diniz, I.; Loureiro, A.; Azinheira, H.; Pereira, A.P.; Tavares, S.; Batista, D.; Várzea, V.Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world. It is also one of the most globally traded commodities. Coffee leaf rust (CLR), caused by the biotrophic fungus Hemileia vastatrix, is the most important disease affecting Arabica coffee growing worldwide, leading to significant yield losses if no control measures are applied. A deep understanding of the complex mechanisms involved in coffee-H. vastatrix interactions, such as the pathogen variability and the mechanisms governing plant resistance and susceptibility, is required to breed efficiently for durable resistance and design new approaches for crop protection. Here we summarize our current understanding across multiple areas related to pathogen infection, variability and candidate effectors, breeding for disease resistance, and the various components of the coffee immune system, by reviewing a comprehensive body of research on CLR and the advances recently made. We also update information about the defense responses activated by the application of plant resistance inducers, a promising alternative to fungicides in the control of CLR. Moreover, we identify and discuss future directions for further research
- Armazenamento de produtos agrícolas secos na região de Luanda, AngolaPublication . Mexia, António; Matos, R.P.; Pereira, A.P.In the present work a summary on the phytossanitary features of stored products, mainly rice, maize, maize flour and cassava flour, in some stores and processing factory situated near Luanda, Angola is presented. A questionnaire was carried out in July/ August 2002 in order to get information on the store capacity, stored foodstuffs and storage period. An entomological survey in the observed storage facilities was conducted to detect inset infestations, by visual search, sampling and using traps with and without pheromone. Twelve insect species of the orders Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Psocoptera were identified. The insect species found in these storage places may cause deterioration to stored products and their presence is considered a serious contamination risk.
