- Consecutive clauses in European Portuguese: a syntactic approachPublication . Brito, Ana Maria; Matos, GabrielaConsecutive clauses exhibit syntactic properties that in several respects remain relatively unknown. Assuming the current generative framework, we will analyse two main types of consecutives, mainly focussing on European Portuguese.
- Orações consecutivas finitas em português europeu: uma análise sintáticaPublication . Brito, Ana Maria; Matos, GabrielaIn this paper we analyse antecedent and free consecutives. In consecutives with overt antecedents, we adopt the split degree hypothesis of Corver (1993, 1997a, b 2013), which has the advantage of separating determiner-like degree word and quantifier-like words. We also adopt Kennedy’s (1997, 1999) and Corver’s (2013) hypotheses that consecutive CPs are adjuncts that act as modifiers of a DegP, which form a unit with the degree/quantifying word at the level of LF. This analysis is extended to free consecutive clauses. We claim that in free consecutives the gradable expression is an elided constituent included in the sentence that contains the consecutive CP, whose content must be recovered by (an element of) the sentence to which it is paratactically related.
- Relativas livres e interrogativas parciais: paralelos e diferençasPublication . Matos, Gabriela; Brito, Ana MariaIn this paper we analyse parallelisms and differences between free relatives, true embedded wh interrogatives, and improper embedded wh interrogatives. While free relatives are DPs which contain a CP, embedded wh interrogatives, both true and improper interrogatives, are CPs. In the last years and in the framework of the Minimalist Program, this different categorial nature has been deduced from formal labelling conditions, mainly related to the nature of head or maximal projection of the moved wh constituent. In this paper, while not rejecting the importance of the difference between head and maximal projection of the wh constituent, we show that the DP or CP nature of the embedded constituent and its [+int] or [+decl] status must be sanctioned by the selection requirements of the matrix predicate.
- The alternation between improper indirect questions and restrictive relatives.Publication . Matos, Gabriela; Brito, Ana MariaThis paper analyses the alternation between improper indirect questions and DPs containing a restrictive relative in European Portuguese. We propose that this alternation is lexically restricted, only occurring with weakly assertive cognitive definite predicates, in the sense of Hinzen and Sheehan (2011), such as saber, 'to know' or descobrir, 'to discover'. We also claim that the alternation between an improper indirect wh-CP and a DP containing a restricitive relative is possible because they share significant features, namely they both involve sentences qirh declarative illocutionary force and wh/operator chains, and exhibit a high level of referentiality, due to the D-linked nature of the whP in the improper indirect question and the definite and specific nature of the DP that includes the relative.
