Resumo(s)
Esta dissertação trata das designações das unidades monetárias, para as quais é
adoptado o termo «numismatónimo», na língua portuguesa. É uma área em que
se constata que existe, por parte das instituições reguladoras e dos instrumentos
de normalização linguística, uma ampla variação de registos, que evidencia a
necessidade de acções de normalização. Tendo como ideias gerais subjacentes a
promoção da língua portuguesa e a valorização do sistema ortográfico
português, pretende-se contribuir com uma reflexão – motivada pela análise
concreta dos numismatónimos – sobre critérios de aportuguesamento, que ajude
na elaboração de glossários técnicos de especialidade, na senda da
recomendação do «Plano de Ação de Brasília para a Promoção, a Difusão e a
Projeção da Língua Portuguesa». O trabalho envolve a recolha de dados de fontes
institucionais ligadas à actividade financeira e de instrumentos lexicográficos e a
selecção de cerca de meia centena de numismatónimos que colocam questões
especialmente interessantes para os fins em vista. Seguidamente, são discutidos
caso a caso estes numismatónimos e identificados os principais problemas de
ortografia, e outros, a eles associados. Nota-se, em particular, a proliferação de
formas (que denota ausência de critérios claros de aportuguesamento) e o
recurso a formas gráficas híbridas, não conformes nem com a língua de origem
nem com o português. Chega-se, por fim, à produção de uma lista de
(propostas) de designações de unidades monetárias em grafia portuguesa,
passível de vir a ser integrada em vocabulários e outros instrumentos oficiais,
após crítica e revisão das autoridades relevantes (dicionaristas, terminólogos ou
outros linguistas) e após a resolução de problemas em aberto e o preenchimento
de algumas lacunas que tiveram de ser deixadas. Esta lista afigura-se
extremamente útil para jornalistas e outros trabalhadores da palavra escrita, no
fundo para todos quantos, enquanto escreventes, pretendam utilizar formas
consonantes com as normas ortográficas portuguesas.
ABSTRACT: This dissertation deals with currency names, for which the term «numismatonym» is adopted. This is an area where we can see an enormous amount of variation regarding spelling issues, when we compare the lists of official financial institutions, dictionaries and vocabularies, thus revealing the urgent need for normalization. With the promotion of the Portuguese language and of the Portuguese (official) spelling system as central underlying ideas, and taking the currency names as a departure point, this dissertation aims at contributing to the wider discussion about the criteria for adapting foreign words to the Portuguese orthography. This discussion is certainly needed in order to create glossaries for technical terms, following the recommendation of the «Plano de Ação de Brasília para a Promoção, a Difusão e a Projeção da Língua Portuguesa». The investigation begins by selecting data from official financial institutions, dictionaries and vocabularies, creating a list of around fifty numismatonyms that are worthwhile discussing. Then a case by case analysis of those numismatonyms is made, where the main spelling (and other relevant) issues are identified and debated. Particularly noteworthy is the proliferation of spelling forms, which reveals the lack of clear (ortho)graphic criteria, and the use of hybrid forms which conform neither with the language of origin nor with Portuguese. A final list of (proposed) designations for currency names – according to the rules of the Portuguese orthography – is finally presented, which can be used by vocabularies and other official instruments, after being criticised and revised by the proper (linguistic) authorities, and after its unsolved problems and gaps are dealt with. Such a list can be extremely useful to journalists and other writing users, who wish to use forms in accordance with the Portuguese orthographic rules.
