The expectancies clients bring to psychotherapy play a significant role in their participation in treatment and in therapeutic change. The therapist knowledge of these expectancies will help him to identify and to develop adequate interventions that allow to increase their participation in the treatment and to prevent its dropping out. In child psychotherapy, parents typically decide to initiate and to remain in the therapy, for that matter parent expectancies are especially important for the participation of the child in the psychotherapy. This study objectives are: to carry through the adaptation of the Parent Expectancies for Therapy Scale (PETS) for the Portuguese population; to verify which relations exist between parent expectancies and the characteristics of the family, the parents and the child; to examine which relations exist between the parent expectancies and the participation in the intervention and the premature termination of treatment; to verify if the same relations between the expectancies and the variables are found in a sample where the subjective experience of both the parents is considered; and, to examine which correlations exist between the characteristics of the family, the parents and the child and the subscales of the PETS. This work intends to verify if any cultural differences are found in comparison with the existing studies about parent expectancies. Throughout the work the hypotheses will be described, on the basis of the existing investigations, as well as the method of the study. As a project of investigation, there will be no description of the results. However, the possible results achieved by the present study, based on the existing investigations, will be discussed. Finally, the anticipated obstacles to the concretion of the investigation, the implications of the study for the practical clinic and some proposals for future investigations will be described.
