This dissertation analyzes how the language used in digital platforms has been changing, adapting to them, and how this change not only distinguishes from traditional media, but also affects them. In addition, the main differences between both forms of language – amateur and professional – and the context of their use – formal and informal – are explored, as well as the adaptation that has been required to existing media. To illustrate the points mentioned, the Portuguese newspaper Público is used as a case study, mainly its media coverage of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, on the 8th of September of 2022. Here, a previously established sample is used, which corresponds to the content published in the 11 days that mediate her Majesty's death and funeral, on the 19th of September of 2022. In this sense, the objective is to collect data, analyze it and understand, also recurring to a conducted interview to a journalist, how Público shares this content on its physical platform, that is, the printed newspaper, as opposed to the type of language used in the sharing of the same matter in its virtual spaces, namely the social media Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and its Website. For this analysis, the theoretical contribution of several researchers in the field, such as Grossberg, Santaella and Kress, is crucial.
