The link between the public library and human rights is becoming increasingly important, as the library can be the custodian of crucial information and facilitate access to it for various minority communities. The LGBTI+ community is one such community, which, due to various circumstances, can rely on the public library to solve their information needs, rather than resorting to family, friends, and other social groups. In this sense, the public library has a duty to welcome the LGBTI+ community through specific products and services. This research starts from the queer needs, trying to understand their articulation with the public library and focusing on the existing collection in the library and the services it offers, which may allow identifying the level of welcome to the LGBTI+ community. Being an unprecedented study in Portugal, the research was developed as a case study focused on the Sintra Municipal Library. The two months of observation resulted in the finding of a collection sparsely adapted to queer literature, mostly dated, and with services that do not represent a special consideration for the LGBTI+ community. The positive aspects found result from other circumstances and not from an intentional strategy. Considering these results, a list of recommendations was drawn up, with features to improve and the indication of sources of support, which can increase the reality of the reception of the LGBTI+ community by public libraries.
