Abstract(s)
Neste contexto, a presente
The quality of the service provided by public libraries relies, largely, on the existence of a qualified workforce. The problematic of the composition of public libraries’ human resources, concerning sex, age range, professional category, education, and continuing professional education is still largely unexplored. In this context, the present dissertation aims to contribute to a larger understanding regarding public libraries’ human resources. The starting question that guides the investigation is “Who are the information professionals working in the public libraries of the North of Portugal?”. This starting question materializes in the general objective of characterizing the Portuguese public libraries’ human resources regarding sex, age range, professional category, education, and professional education in Librarianship and Information Science. The methodological apparatus guiding the present investigation is anchored on the method of documentary research. A literature review was conducted in order to give context to the investigation. The literature review concerned the concept of information professional, the profile of the public librarian, and the studies conducted, internationally, on the composition of public libraries’ human resources. Empirical data was collected by survey. The questionnaire was sent to the professionals responsible for the libraries’ pertaining to the 85 Portuguese municipalities that have public libraries in the North of Portugal. The analysis of the data collected revealed a feminized and ageing workforce in all professional categories analyzed. A low investment in continuing professional education was identified, revealing a concerning situation in the face of an ageing workforce.
