A iconoclastia é certamente a maior demonstração da natureza autodestrutiva do
Homem para com a própria memória do seu passado; encontramo-la em diferentes instâncias
da história, e a escolhida para esta dissertação é uma das diversas que poderemos estudar. Desta
forma, apresentar-se-á não só como um estudo do modus operandi Paleocristão perante a
destruição da arte pagã; mas também como uma desmantelagem do fenómeno em si, apontando
as suas diversas facetas na história e por consequente, na história da arte assim como as
consequências deste para a perceção e compreensão da imagem.
Iconoclasm is certainly humanity’s biggest display of its self-destructive nature regarding its own memory of the past; we find it in several instances throughout history, the one chosen for this dissertation one of many we can study. With this in mind, it will be presented a study of the modus operandi of early Christians when breaking pagan idols and art; as well as a deconstruction of the iconoclasm phenomenon itself, pointing out its different roles throughout history and the the consequences it had not only in the history of art but in the perception and understanding of image itself.
