O presente relatório de estágio é realizado como requisito para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Tradução pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. O trabalho aqui apresentado é o produto do estágio curricular concretizado na editora Ponto de Fuga entre outubro de 2019 e maio de 2020. Desta maneira, o que se segue é uma descrição do processo de tradução de The First Reader & Three Plays, de Gertrude Stein, a obra de literatura infantojuvenil trabalhada no decorrer deste estágio curricular. A estrutura do presente relatório pretende replicar o processo de tradução. Assim, começa por uma análise do texto original e à tradução de Luísa Costa Gomes de The World Is Round, também escrito por Stein, cuja tradução estabeleceu os parâmetros de tradução a serem seguidos na tradução de The First Reader; passando por uma contextualização teórica, que irá elucidar os leitores sobre as estratégias de tradução utilizadas; e finalizando com uma análise à tradução realizada descrevendo mais pormenorizadamente o processo tradutório, apresentando exemplos de dificuldades encontradas e as suas soluções, seguindo-se as considerações finais sobre todo o trabalho realizado. Pretende-se que este relatório venha contribuir para uma melhor compreensão da tradução infantojuvenil e do trabalho dos tradutores e tradutoras enquanto mediadores e mediadoras socioculturais.
This internship report is written in order to obtain a master's degree in Translation by the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. This report is the product of an internship at the publisher Ponto de Fuga, which took place between the months of October 2019 and May 2020. Therefore, what follows is a description of the translation process of the book The First Reader & Three Plays, by Gertrude Stein, the text which was translated during the curricular internship. The structure of the report here presented aims to replicate the translation process. Thus, it starts with an analysis of the original text and of the translation by Luísa Costa Gomes of Stein’s The World Is Round, since Costa Gomes’s translation was established as the model to be followed in the translation of The First Reader. The second chapter provides a theoretical contextualization that will elucidate the readers about the translation strategies that were used. The third chapter analyses the proposed translation and discusses the difficulties encountered and how they were addressed. The report concludes with final considerations about the work undertaken. This report aims to contribute to a better comprehension of the translation of children’s literature and of translators’ role as socio-cultural mediators.
