Hinduism is one of the largest and oldest religions in the world. In Portugal, there are about 7000 Hindus whose habits and customs can influence their health. It is therefore important that pharmacists are better acquainted with this religion as well as the believers’ habits. In this way, they can acquire cultural competence and provide better adherence to the prescribed therapy. One of the important habits and customs for this work is the use of spices/foods to treat diseases and symptoms. To carry out this study, a cross-sectional and descriptive design was used through a face-to-face survey of questions divided into 3 sections: sociodemographic, behaviors in health or illness and use of medicinal plants and food for the treatment/prevention of illness symptoms. The data was processed using an Excel file and then imported into the IBM SPSS software (version 26). The data collected shows that a large part of the study population complies with the treatment prescribed by the doctor, even if their formulation is in capsule form, is composed of ethyl alcohol or interferes with religious fasts. The most prevalent chronic diseases in the survey respondents were arterial hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes. The most widely used alternative medicine is Ayurvedic and the most used spices/foods are ginger, turmeric and cumin. In general, the participants knew the effects of the food/spices consumed, although it is not possible to prove whether the amount ingested/applied is necessary to obtain the desired effect, which is why further studies are needed.
