A presente dissertação consiste numa introdução e tradução anotada das Saturae de Pérsio. A introdução encontra-se dividida em três secções que será importante abordar para um melhor entendimento da obra do poeta: a sua vida, o género literário em que a sua escrita se filia e o estilo com que se expressa. A sua vida é descrita mediante uma tradução da obra Vitae Persii (uma breve biografia do autor); o género literário é extensamente analisado devido à difícil caracterização do género satírico; e o estilo com que se expressa é abordado para compreender a aparentemente intangível complexidade dos raciocínios do autor a fim de melhor os reflectir na tradução.
O texto latino encontra-se dividido entre seis sátiras e um curto proémio composto em metro coliâmbico. Cada um destes poemas é acompanhado por tradução, a qual — por sua vez — compreenderá notas que procuram explicitar ou compreender as ideias subjacentes a uma leitura mais imediata do texto, referências e alusões que de outra forma não seriam explícitas e os paralelismos de maior relevo com outros autores.
This dissertation consists of an introduction and annotated translation of Persius’ Saturae. The introduction is divided into three sections, each of which consists of topics of great importance for a better understanding of the author’s work: his life, the genre in which he writes, and his style. His life is covered through a translation of Vita Persii (a brief summary of the author’s life); the satirical genre is extensively analysed due to its difficult characterization; and Persius’ style is scrutinised in order to fully grasp the seemingly unapproachable complexities of the author’s thought (so that his ideas may better transpire in the translation). The Latin text itself is composed of six satires and a short choliambic prologue. Each of these poems is accompanied by translation — which, in turn, is complemented by notes that clarify any underlying ideas and references that would otherwise go unnoticed, as well as any major allusions to other authors of greater importance.
