This dissertation is part of the study of teaching foreign language, more specifically the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language/second language. The main objective is to expose the author's experience as a teacher in a face-to-face volunteering project for an adult and diverse audience and the continuation of that experience through remote learning. In addition, the goal is also to link this experience with the theoretical assumptions that will help to answer research questions, with a strong emphasis on the importance of social and cultural components. The first chapter presents the theoretical framework and discusses important topics for the rest of the dissertation: methods and approaches in teaching foreign languages; psychology in the process of teaching and learning foreign languages/second languages; teaching heterogeneous classes; the importance of sociocultural knowledge; online teaching and its challenges. The second chapter is dedicated to the volunteer project carried out by the author in the summer of 2020 in Marvão, Portugal. It consists of an analysis and description of the classes, tasks performed and teaching material used. One of the main characteristics of the target audience of this project was its heterogeneity, which could serve as an inspiration for teachers with similar classes. The last chapter is also based on the author's experience, but the main theme is online teaching and the target audience reduced to two students. In recent years, alternative ways of teaching languages have become a reality, but with them new challenges also arise. This dissertation connects important topics in the teaching of foreign languages today with a real and recent experience.
