The subject of this study is the first written memoires of Portuguese actors, a set of eighteen volumes left by nine memorialists born in the 19th century, most of them active in the 20th century. Seventy-one years elapse between the first publication (1876) and the last (1947), containing references to a period of approximately one hundred years, from the 1830s to the first half of the 1940s. Our aim was to establish a comparative reading of the narratives in order to identify issues and themes most commonly arisen or which, deserving special attention from a memorialist, would contribute to their contextualization. Themes and issues that, when crossing historical periods, are also addressed in a diachronic perspective. These are narratives in which, by rescuing individual artistic paths, memorialists give meanings to the theater/actor dyad as a sociohistorical phenomenon. On approaching the corpus, we adapted the interpretative phenomenological analysis and resorted to studies from various fields, saliently, Theatre Studies, Historiography, Sociology and Literature Studies. In the first part, we approach the written memoirs as a phenomenon and the circumstances in which the volumes of the corpus were produced, as well as their reception. In the second part, we put in relation themes and topics within the context of the periods of Portuguese history in which they emerge in the narratives, namely, Liberalismo (1834-1851), Regeneração (1851-1876), Rotativismo (1876-1910), Primeira República and the early period of the Estado Novo (1910-1933, and from 1933 to 1945). In the third part, we consider the narratives of each actor in relation to their individual path and artistic career. The identified themes and topics converge to the deconstruction of the theater/actor dyad as a suspended reality, or apart, within the framework of social normalities, revealing, thus, tensions and representations to which the dyad was subjected between the 19th and 20th centuries.
