Abstract(s)
The starting point of this thesis was the qualifications for familiar of the Holy Office, which are located in the National Archives of Torre do Tombo in Portugal. Through these documents, we get to know the members belonging to the elite of Para and Maranhao, considering that in these processes we found valuable information, such as copies of their baptism and marriage certificates, information about origins, genealogies and even some peculiarities that were reported by the witnesses questioned. We aim to introduce a group of the Para's elite that was established in the captaincy of Para and Maranhao in the second half of the 18th century. Thereunto, we analysed the origin of this elite (geographic and socially speaking), its insertion in the Luso Overseas Empire, the sociability and solidarity networks that they built through marriages, friendships and businesses. Our intention is to answer the question: Who was this elite, consisting of men and women empowered by the Inquisition? Following this discussion, we analysed the profile, the strategies, the forms of accumulation, the properties, the family, relatives and social networks of men and women who applied for qualification to the Holy Office in the 18th century, being residents in the state of Grao-Para and Maranhao. In the first part of this research, we present more general data, like the characterization of the Amazonian space, its economic and administrative components, as well as the general profile of this Inquisition-enabled elite. In the second part, we brought the trajectories of some of these enabled people, their strategies for obtaining and maintaining their status, quality and power. In this regard, the names and the family names of this elite become the researches' common thread that connects to the plots of the economic, political and social life of the colonial Grao-Para.
