Respiratory diseases are one of the majors concerns worldwide, as they are one of the leading causes of death and hospitalizations in Portugal. The costs relatable to the medical treatments are increasing, but due to the bacterial multidrug resistance to antibiotics, patients are looking for new therapeutic alternatives. From the earliest civilizations, plants and theirs features are the most used mean to achieve the therapeutic healing, in fact they are believed to have supernatural powers. With the growing development of the pharmaceutical industry over the years, interest in the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants has been declined and the majority use of plants is restricted to remote areas of the planet. Due to the lack of health resources such as medicinal plants sometimes they are the only existing therapeutic base. Thus, due to its unique properties that aid in the treatment and prevention of diseases, it becomes very important to promote research and increase scientific knowledge about the traditional medicine in order to promote conscious and safe use. This monograph aims to provide information on the main diseases of the respiratory tract and to conduct a survey of the use of medicinal plants by society, based on plants with particular action on the respiratory tract. To this end, a literature review was conducted on the subject to find studies on this specific use, highlighting clinical trials that prove the action and application of plants in a situation of respiratory disease, in order to prevent its onset or to have therapeutic action. Four plants are covered in this project: Thymus vulgaris L., Echinacea, Eucalyptus globulus Labill., Mentha piperita L., emphasizing their generalized characteristics, phytochemical and main pharmacological applications.
