Abstract(s)
At the present time, cardiovascular diseases constitute the main cause of death and physical disabilities in Portugal. Age is one of the main risk factors in the onset of cardiovascular diseases as the older the person is, the more vulnerable people are to these disorders. In the majority of developed countries, including Portugal, an increasing ageing population is a result of a falling birth rate coupled with an increase in life expectancy. Ageing is dynamic process that causes major changes in the human body leading to a loss of functional capacity and increase in chronic illness. Due to these realities, health insurers must be able to adjust their policies to these demographic trends. The inclusion of elder groups in insurance coverage has been in Portugal a natural development which has until recently been viewed as a handicap for the industry. Yet the insurance market has been demonstrating its flexibility by willingness to o↵er policies which set no age limits for benefits. Multicare, the leader in health insurance in Portugal and sponsor of this Ph.D. project, wants to prepare itself to be able to insure the health of an ageing population by controlling the inherent risks concerning this group. The reality of increasing age leading to increasing risk of cardiovascular diseases and other disabilities which require high costs to treat make necessary a thorough study of this issue, that is insuring an ageing population more prone to poor health requiring expensive treatment. The present industrial Ph. D. project aims therefore to analyse Multicare’s viability to insure these risks more specifically than usually done in Portugal. This study intends to show the development of theory and implementation of a specific model for insurance premium calculations, annually renewable, for the risks associated with cardiovascular diseases connected with ageing.
