The theme "sensitive skin" poses many doubts, starting by its etiology and physiopathology. It is not actually a clinical condition, but still it presents a very complex, multi factorial and prevalent issue. There are other cutaneous states, which are, at times, wrongly connected to sensitive skin, like atopic skin and fragile skin, being the former different from the studied in this thesis. Although this “sensibility” it is diffuse and subjective, it has been tried to associate with barrier function, one of the basic functions of the skin, which can be evaluated through the transepidermal water loss (TEWL). There are, however, multiple factors that can trigger this condition, like the heat, cold, wind, sun, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, among others, and it is not always easy to pinpoint the responsible agent. An individual who claims to have sensitive skin often associates it with many and diverse signs and symptoms. All of these symptoms are subjective, which has made it more difficult to characterize this issue and causing the necessity to develop a test which supplies objective data, which is reproducible and accurate, to employ as a means of diagnosis. Nevertheless, the incidence of this issue is growing, since the number of people claiming to have sensitive skin is increasing. Thus, it is of extreme importance to try to take care of an affected skin, eliminating, if possible, the causing agent. It is equally important to know the products that are applied to the skin, as well as their effects. In this present assignment we look to update the knowledge regarding this current issue.
