Na primeira metade do século XIX, surge nos Estados Unidos da América o Movimento de Restauração iniciado por Thomas Campbell, pelo seu filho Alexander Campbell e por Barton Stone. Buscavam juntos a unidade da Igreja, fazendo da Bíblia sua única regra de fé e de conduta, rejeitando toda e qualquer forma de credo, buscando viver segundo o padrão do Novo Testamento. Entretanto, enfrentaram a complexa realidade das correntes cristãs ao buscarem viver o lema deste movimento: «Falamos onde a Bíblia fala e calamo-nos onde a Bíblia se cala»; e «Usar nomes Bíblicos para coisas Bíblicas»; quanto ao baptismo, passaram a buscar a perspectiva segundo a Igreja Primitiva. Esta questão do baptismo cristão tornou-se o ponto central deste movimento. Alexander Campbell defendeu um baptismo para remissão dos pecados que muda e transforma o indivíduo e a sociedade na qual está inserido. Esta posição com relação ao baptismo produziu debates em meio à imensidão de perspectivas sobre o baptismo cristão no seio das comunidades existentes. E este novo movimento ramificou-se até os dias de hoje dando origem a três grupos de Igrejas: Igrejas de Cristo (Cristãs), Igrejas de Cristo (a Capela) e a Igreja Cristã (Discípulos de Cristo).
In the first half of the nineteenth century the United States of America saw the Restoration Movement initiated by Thomas Campbell, his son Alexander Campbell, and Barton Stone, who sought together the unity of the Church, making the Bible their only rule of faith and conduct, rejecting every form of creed, seeking to live according to the pattern of the New Testament. With this search for unity, they confronted the complex reality of Christian currents in seeking to live the motto of this movement: «Where the Scriptures speak, we speak; where the Scriptures do not speak, we do not speak»; and, «Using Biblical Names for Biblical Things», as for baptism they began to seek perspective according to the Early Church. This question of Christian baptism has become the central point of this movement. Alexander Campbell advocated a baptism for remission of sins that changes and transforms the individual and the society in which he is inserted. This position regarding baptism has produced debates amidst the immensity of perspectives on Christian baptism within existing communities. And this new movement branched out to the present day giving rise to three groups of Churches: Churches of Christ (Christians), Churches of Christ (a Capella) and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
