Os estudos de caso têm conhecido uma assinalável popularidade na investigação em Educação
Matemática. Têm grandes potencialidades mas também os seus problemas. Este artigo discute o que
caracteriza esta abordagem e como é que ela se distingue de outras formas de conduzir a investigação;
qual é a natureza do conhecimento assim produzido, principalmente quando inserido numa perspectiva
interpretativa; e quais os critérios de qualidade a usar para apreciar o seu valor. Um estudo de caso é
caracterizado como incidindo numa entidade bem definida como um programa, uma instituição, um sistema
educativo, uma pessoa ou uma unidade social. Visa conhecer em profundidade o seu “como” e os
seus “porquês”, fazendo justiça à sua unidade e identidade próprias. Assume-se como uma investigação
particularística, procurando descobrir o que nela há de mais essencial e característico. Um estudo de caso
pode com vantagem apoiar-se numa orientação teórica bem definida; além disso, pode seguir uma perspectiva
interpretativa, que procura compreender como é o mundo do ponto de vista dos participantes ou
uma perspectiva pragmática, tendo em vista proporcionar uma perspectiva global, tanto quanto possível
completa e coerente do objecto de estudo. O artigo defende que as qualidades específicas essenciais de
um estudo de caso incluem uma definição clara do objecto de estudo, a evidência dos aspectos característicos
fundamentais do caso e o facto de este acrescentar conhecimento ao conhecimento já existente.
Case studies got a remarkable popularity in mathematics education research. They have both their strengths and their problems. This paper discusses what characterizes this research and how it is different from other ways of conducting research; the nature of knowledge that is produced, especially when they are done within an interpretative perspective; and what quality criteria may be used to access their value. A case study focuses on a well-defined entity such as a program, an institution, an educational system, a person, or a social unit. It intends to know in a deep way its “how” and its “whys”, recognizing its unity and identity. It is deliberately particularistic; searching to discover what is most essential and characteristic in it. A case study may draw upon an explicit theoretical orientation. Besides, it may follow and interpretative perspective, that seeks to understand how is the world seen from the perspective of the participants. Or else it may follow a more pragmatic perspective, seeking to create as much as possible a global, complete, and coherent account of t object of study. The paper claims that the essential specific qualities of a case study include a clear definition of the object of study, the evidence of fundamental characteristic features of the case and the fact that it adds knowledge to the existing knowledge.
