Since the early 60’s of the twentieth century, combined oral contraceptives (COC) are used worldwide in order to prevent unwanted pregnancy and its consequences. Since then, it is scientifically documented their relation with venous thromboembolism (VTE), which stands today as the most important adverse effect of hormonal contraception. Over the years, several research groups have attempted to study this thrombotic risk with the different formulations and the associations between COC and the other risk factors of VTE, like advanced age, overweight or obesity and the presence of thrombophilia. A systematic search was made using the PubMed database and other journals for all relevant articles published in English since 2009 that included second, third and fourth-generation COC, having been selected the relevant ones to the ultimate goal of this paper.
