Valorização do fundo antigo da Biblioteca do Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros : projecto de digitalização

Numa era em que as tecnologias digitais desempenham um papel fundamental na sociedade da informação, as bibliotecas não podem ficar à margem das oportunidades oferecidas por estes recursos. As novas formas de produzir, utilizar e disponibilizar a informação são um campo aberto de possibilidades para a gestão das coleções. Este trabalho visou a elaboração de uma proposta de digitalização e disponibilização em linha, em forma de projeto, de uma coleção de obras antigas, e nalguns casos raras, que fazem parte da coleção da Biblioteca do Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros. Trata-se de um conjunto de livros que se situam cronologicamente entre os séculos XVI e XVIII e que se enquadram naquilo que é o foco temático das coleções do Ministério, ou seja, nas áreas da política externa, relações internacionais, diplomacia, direito internacional e história. Procuramos através da digitalização e disponibilização da coleção, por um lado, dar a conhecer uma coleção que contém fontes importantes para o conhecimento da história da diplomacia portuguesa, contribuindo também para a difusão cultural dos fundos antigos; por outro lado, pretendemos contribuir para a sua preservação, uma vez que se trata de uma coleção antiga e rara e a manipulação dos originais pode eventualmente provocar danos irreversíveis. De uma forma ou de outra, o que está em causa é a valorização de uma parte da coleção do MNE. Foi nosso intuito que o estudo resultasse numa proposta de projeto realista e que fosse exequível com os meios técnicos e humanos existentes na Instituição detentora da coleção. Para a sua elaboração foram consultadas normas, guias, recomendações e foi ainda feita uma análise aos projetos já existentes com o mesmo tipo de coleção, seguindo assim as boas práticas já implementadas em Portugal, nomeadamente a experiência da Biblioteca Nacional.
In an era where digital technologies have a main role in the information society, libraries must be aware of the opportunities offered by these resources. New ways to produce, use and make the information available are an open field of possibilities for collection management. This work aimed the development of a digitization project and the online availability of a collection of old and rare books, belonging to Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros (MNE - Portuguese Foreign Office) library. This is a book collection dated from 16th to 18th centuries, concerning foreign policy, international affairs, diplomacy, international law and history. Through digitization, the project aimed to make a relevant collection of Portuguese diplomacy sources publicly available, and to preserve these rare and old books, due to the possible severe damage caused by its handling. One way or another, the objective was to add value to a part of the MNE collection. We believe that this is a realistic and achievable project with the human and technical means available at the collection owner. This project is grounded on the current rules, guidelines and recommendations, and it is the result of the analysis of some projects developed for the same type of collection, and following good practices already implemented in Portugal, namely the experience of Portuguese National Library.
