Resumo(s)
Lapa do Anecrial is a cave site located in Portuguese Estremadura and discovered in 1991. Three field
seasons, that took place in the summers of 1992, 1993 and 1995 revealed a stratigraphy spanning the period of the Würm’s Last Pleniglacial. Two archaeological levels, separated by sterile layers, were discovered: one dating to the Solutrean, and one other to the Proto-Solutrean.
This paper presents the results from the excavation of the second level, which presented excellent postdepositional preservation conditions. Three clusters of different lithic raw materials were found,
surrounding a hearth. Two charcoal samples have already been dated, giving this level an absolute date
centered on 21 560 BP.
Due to the excellent post-depositional conditions, extensive refitting of the lithic assemblage was possible. For some of the raw materials, over 70% refitting success made possible a complete interpretation of the present reduction sequences and strategies. The reduction strategies of flint and quartz are essentially identical, showing an association of prismatic unipolar bladelet cores and thick carenated and thick-nosed
scrapers, which were also exploited as bladelet cores.
The faunal remains of the Proto-Solutrean level at Anecrial are composed essentially of rabbit bones
(MNI = 9, almost all located inside the hearth), and some scattered bones of other bigger mammals, wild
goat being the only identified so far.
After describing the excavated stratigraphy and evaluating the post-depositional conditions of the Proto-
Solutrean level, a Spatial analysis of the remains is presented, followed by a technological study of the lithic
assemblage. After presented this, a first attempt to integrate the spatial analysis patterns with the ones
resulting from the lithic assemblage and faunal studies is. A reconstitution of the events related with the
Proto-Solutrean occupation at Anecrial is, finally, hypothesized.
