Abstract(s)
Context: Conscious sedation for the behavioral control of the child during an odontopediatric therapy is a technique already widely used by dentists. The main objective of conscious sedation is to create conditions that lessen the child’s anxiety and fear, enhancing its cooperation during dental treatment procedure and reducing the risk of complications or negative effects by allowing the dentist to efficiently proceed with the treatment up to its conclusion. Objectives: To evaluate the efficiency of the various sedative agents used orally for the behavioral control of the patient during the odontopediatric consultation. Research Strategy: Research methods were set for the following database: Cochrane Collection Plus, EMBASE, MEDLINE via PUBMED, OvidSP and CINAHL via EBSCOhost. Additionally, related journals were manually perused. No language restriction was set for these studies. Selection Criteria: Randomized clinical trials that compare the efficiency of the various orally given pharmacological products versus placebos, in populations under 16 years of age. Additionally, systematic reviews and related meta-analysis were included. Data collection and analysis: Of the twelve selected studies, only one was retained for the systematic review. After reading the complete texts, the other studies were excluded for the following reasons: crossover design, use of nitrous-oxide during the sedation and the lack of respect of the revisions primary outcome. Revisers’ conclusion: The small number of studies included in this systematic review does not allow the drawing of sufficient evidence to be able to answer the given question.
