estes jovens artistas, cujos valores, no início deste processo, rejeitam a presença feminina,
qual a função destas artistas nestas práticas.
no trabalho artístico destas mulheres.
Abstract: The city plays a key role in the construction of individual and collective identity. Art in the public space is simultaneously a subject of union and division creating a deep impact in the urban landscape. On the one hand, Public Art represents an opportunity to express ourselves. On the other hand, it destroys, deconstructs and provokes the observer and the observed. In Portugal, this artistic practice is mostly represented by a male audience. The opposition between masculine and feminine genres lies in the representation of woman as sexual symbol and object of desire. However, the integration of women in the manifestations of urban art gave rise to multiple discourses and narratives which keep growing. Usually, these young artists belong to various subcultures. As in graffiti, the values of these groups tend to reject the female presence. However, with the emergence of new art expressions the conflicts have been replaced by a desire of inclusion as well as a mutual sense of belonging to a movement towards exploring and enhancing the diversity of the aesthetic languages. The street-artists’ testimonies are crucial to understand their personal roles in this artistic practices. The most recurrent theme in the female artistic work is the questioning of women’s condition by means of a rich discourse about historical and social symbols. Through a comparative analysis between Portugal and the international reality, we reflect about today’s female contemporary artist. This analysis is based on a chronological context focusing on 20th and 21st centuries. It provides at the same time a profile of the female street-artist in Portugal through a wide range of examples, from artistic work to cultural projects. Our theorical-practical approach aims at identifying the urban art phenomena in today’s society by studying its importance in the relation between people and the public space. The Portuguese female street-artist will be our case study. We will try to verify if there are opportunities to consolidate the female street-artist as a relevant agent in the market of art.
