Este trabalho tem como principal objetivo a tradução de uma seleção de contos infantis integrados na coletânea Japanese Fairy Tales, de Lafcadio Hearn e G. James, originalmente escrita em inglês, e publicada pela primeira vez em 1885. Partindo-se de uma caracterização do texto e contexto de partida, assim como do contexto de chegada, recorrer-se-á aos Estudos de Tradução, aos Estudos Literários e à Linguística para definir normas e estratégias de tradução, apresentando-se seguidamente uma reflexão sobre as questões suscitadas no decurso da sua aplicação prática a este corpus.
O presente projeto visa contrariar a quase inexistência de traduções em português das obras de Lafcadio Hearn. O autor, à semelhança de Wenceslau de Moraes, foi um grande intérprete da cultura japonesa. Com este trabalho pretende-se, simultaneamente, contribuir para o conhecimento da obra de Lafcadio Hearn e para o estudo da tradução literária infanto-juvenil, que carece de mais atenção e investigação.
Abstract: The main purpose of this project is to translate a selection of children’s tales, originally in English and part of the Japanese Fairy Tales collection, published for the first time in 1885 and written by Lafcadio Hearn and G. James. We will begin with an analysis of the context of both source and target text; and we will resort to Translation Studies, Literary Studies and Linguistics in order to define translation strategies and approaches. Thereafter we will reflect on several questions raised in the process the translation of this collection. This research aims to counter the near absence of Portuguese translations of Lafcadio Hearn’s work. Just like Wenceslau de Moraes, Hearn was a great interpreter of the Japanese culture. This project aims to increase the knowledge of Hearn’s work as well as contribute to the study of translation of children’s literature, a field that needs more attention and research.
