A Leitão & Irmão (1877-1897) e as joias da família Real Portuguesa

Abstract

A Leitão & Irmão joalheiros inaugurou, em 1877, uma loja no elegante Chiado, em Lisboa. A empresa, fundada no Porto em 1822, deslocou-se para a capital de modo a mais facilmente divulgar a sua arte e captar novos clientes. A proximidade da corte e o reconhecimento concedido pelo rei D. Luís de Joalheiros da Coroa originou a designação de fornecedores da Casa Real. E esta proximidade entre a joalharia e a família real contribuiu para que se tornasse um estabelecimento da moda e que os mais abastados da sociedade portuguesa da época se tornassem seus clientes. A Leitão & Irmão veio trazer uma nova dinâmica ao sector da ourivesaria, pois gozava de reconhecimento internacional e apresentava o que de melhor se efetuava em Portugal e no estrangeiro. A investigação levou-nos ao espólio da Leitão & Irmão, que se encontra na Biblioteca de Arte da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, em Lisboa, podendo verificar-se nos seus registos, as relações desta empresa com os reais clientes. Através dos poucos livros de contas correntes, que ainda existem, e de outros livros em que se encontram registadas algumas aquisições de membros da família real, chegámos aos resultados que se apresentam neste estudo. Assim, procurámos saber qual o número de peças e as mais solicitadas por cada um dos membros da família real aqui retratados, os montantes despendidos nas aquisições das mesmas e a correspondência existente entre a joalharia e os soberanos, para satisfação das suas solicitações, além das peças mais emblemáticas solicitadas à prestigiosa joalharia pelos monarcas e que ficaram para a História.

Abstract: The Leitão & Irmão jewellers opened, in 1877, a store in the elegant neighbourhood of Chiado, in Lisbon. The company, founded in Porto in 1822, moved to the capital in order to make it easy to disseminate their art and get new customers. The proximity to the “Corte” and the recognition as Jewellers of the Crown granted by the king D. Luís was in the origin of their designation as suppliers of the Royal House. This proximity between the Jewellery and the Royal family contributed to their status as a stylish establishment, which attracted, as customers, the wealthy part of the Portuguese society at the time. The Leitão & Irmão brought a new dynamic to the jewellery industry as they had international recognition and presented the best of what was made in Portugal and abroad. The investigation led us to the Leitão & Irmão patrimony, which is held by the Biblioteca de Arte da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, in Lisbon, and where the relations between this company and their Royal customers can be consulted in the records. Through the few account books, which still exist, and other books in which are recorded some of the Royal family members’ acquisitions, we have reached the results described in this study. We have tried to know the number of the pieces of jewellery and which were most requested by each member of the Royal family mentioned above, the amounts spent on acquisitions, the correspondence carried out between the jewellery and the Royal family to satisfy their requests and the most emblematic pieces requested by the monarchs to the prestigious jewellery, who heretofore stayed in History.
