ABSTRACT: It is now undeniable that our model of development has reached a point of impasse and uncertainty. Values related to the role of institutions, science and technology, are going through a complex metamorphosis with an uncertain outcome. At the same time, the desire for continuous economic growth that has served as a benchmark for our societies has begun to reveal itself as unbearable with regard to its social and environmental consequences. Cities, due to their dominant presence in the organization of the world, are probably the most adequate context to launch a new vision of sustainability for our collective future. Throughout this work, we will try to show in which way the rediscovery of Aristotle's thought about human nature, ethics, and politics, can help us build more sustainable communities, as well as to define new models of development as alternatives to the present dominant paradigm.
