Francisco de Mendoça, jesuita e pregador: o Sermão de Santa Teresa, em Évora, no ano da sua canonização (1622)

Abstract

En este artículo podemos ver los relatos de las festividades que tuvieron lugar en Portugal con motivo de la canonización de Santa Teresa, con especial énfasis en la ciudad de Évora, donde, el 24 de abril de 1622, el jesuita Francisco de Mendoça predicó un sermón sobre la santa en la Iglesia de los Carmelitas Descalzos. También analizamos la imagen que traza el sermón de santa Teresa y su acción fundadora, así como la peroración en la que el predicador invoca la protección especial que la reliquia de la mano de Teresa, en Lisboa desde 1585, traería al Reino y a los Descalzos. Finalmente observamos en textos de los siglos XVII y XVIII la utilización política de la reliquia sagrada y de una supuesta profecía revelada a santa Teresa, al servicio de la propaganda anticastellana y de la legitimación de la Casa de Braganza y el imperio portugués.

This article first offers an overview of the festivities held in Portugal on the occasion of the canonization of Saint Teresa of Ávila. Second, it pays special attention to the sermon preached by the Jesuit Priest Francisco de Mendoça on Saint Teresa of Ávila, in the Church of the Discalced Carmelites, during the festivities held in the city of Évora, on April 24, 1622. The paper offers an analysis of this sermon, focusing on how it creates an image of Saint Teresa and her founding action. The analysis then zooms in on the peroration, in which the preacher invokes the special protection that the Holy relics of her hand (held in Lisbon since 1585) was expected to bring to both the kingdom and the Carmelites. Finally, the paper reveals how 17th and 18th century texts made political use both of the Holy relic of Saint Teresa and of an alleged divine prophecy revealed to Saint Teresa for the purpose of anti-Castilian resistance and legitimization of the Royal House of Braganza and the Portuguese empire.
