Resumo(s)
Our daily lives on the streets of big cities are full of transits that relate to the activities performed in these territories and their citizens. No matter where we go, we involuntarily read information and texts to which we don't always pay much attention: lettering, signs, graffiti, directions, among other typographic objects that present themselves in numerous forms and materials to meet different needs. The set of these elements is what composes the typographic landscape, the central theme of this investigation, which unfolds from a bibliographic review of numerous ways of classifying this material present in public spaces, proposed by design researchers since the 1960s. Taking as case studies the cities of Lisbon in Portugal, and Sao Paulo in Brazil, we sought to understand how their typographic artifacts are shaped through legislation, as well as civil initiatives that somehow act in the preservation of these artifacts in these two territories. Finally, an original frame of classifying typographic artifacts is proposed, grouping them into three intersecting groups, divided into Essential, Referential, and Ephemeral, which also resulted in the development of the practical component of this work, called Passeio Público (a legal term in Portuguese used to define sidewalks in Sao Paulo), which offers a kind of walk through the streets of these two territories to present and demonstrate these categories. This entire journey was elaborated to propose a comprehensive and practical way of classifying, as well as outlining the cultural value that letters and words present in our daily lives possess.
