Abstract(s)
This study aims to analyze the structure of comparative advantages among BRICS+ countries and determine the type of trade most likely to emerge with the hypothetical creation of a customs union, distinguishing between intra-industry and inter-industry trade. The methodology is based on an empirical analysis using the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) Index and correlation coefficients between the RCA indices of the countries under analysis to identify the degree of similarity or complementarity in their productive specializations. The study relies on 2019 data from the INTRACEN database to determine each country's productive specializations and to evaluate the complementarity of their economies in terms of external trade. The results indicate that, while there are opportunities for intra-industry trade in some cases, inter-industry trade would benefit the most due to the economic diversity of the potential members.
