Public support for the political system has been widely described as a sine qua non element for the survival and quality of democratic regimes (Easton, 1965; Lipset, 1959; Linz, 2001). In this sense, in recent decades there has been a proliferation of scientific research into the determinants that explain support for democracy, both in times of normality and in the face of extreme and anomalous phenomena. This research is part of this disciplinary area and sought to analyse how the financial crisis, firstly, and the pandemic crisis, secondly, influenced the degree of normative adherence of the Portuguese towards the political system in Portugal. In the same vein, we sought to identify, in a comparative way, the micro and macro determinants that explain the diffuse support for Portuguese democracy in the face of two crises of a different nature. The results are in line with our theoretical expectations. While the financial crisis was responsible for a marked reduction in diffuse support for the democratic regime, the same cannot be said for the pandemic crisis. In fact, the reinforcement witnessed not only in the defence of the democratic regime but also in terms of satisfaction with the democratic regime and institutional trust allows us to discuss the possibility of this phenomenon constituting an rally round the flag effect, widely suggested by the literature.
