Abstract(s)
OBJECTIVOS: O presente estudo tem por objectivo investigar a validade da electromiografia de superfície (sEMG) na medição da actividade do músculo profundo transverso do abdómen (TrA).
METODOLOGIA: 28 sujeitos (25,82±3,83 anos) participaram no estudo. Foram realizados três exercícios abdominais distintos. Através de ecografia abdominal (USI) foram registadas as alterações de espessura dos músculos oblíquo externo (OE), oblíquo interno (OI) e TrA. Simultaneamente, registou-se a actividade muscular através da sEMG. Os eléctrodos foram colocados de forma a recolher, preferencialmente, a actividade do TrA. Determinaram-se os coeficientes de correlação (CC) entre a percentagem de MVC da EMG, e percentagem de alteração da espessura muscular.
RESULTADOS: O ICC para as medições com USI foi mais elevado durante a ligeira contracção abdominal (0,789-0,971, p<0,05) e contracção pélvica (0,512-0,972, p<0,05). O ICC para a EMG apresentou maior variabilidade (-1.815-0.966, p<0.05). Foram observadas correlações significativas apenas durante a contração pélvica , com um CC mais elevado para o TrA (0.506, p<0.01) seguido do OI (0.396, p<0.05).
CONCLUSÕES: A sEMG é uma ferramente de extrema importância na medição da actividade muscular, mas não aparenta ser precisa na medição de músculos profundos como o TrA. Para músculos profundos deve ser dada preferência à USI e à EMG de profundidade.
ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether surface electromyography (EMG) can adequately measure the activity of the deep abdominal muscle, transversus abdominis (TrA). METHODS: 28 men (age 25,82±3,83 years ) participated in this study. A series of three different abdominal exercises were executed. Changes in thickness from resting baseline values were obtained for TrA, internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) using ultrasound imaging (USI). Surface EMG was measured concurrently. Electrodes were positioned to preferentially capture the activity of TrA. Correlation coefficients (CC) were determined between EMG percentage of MVC, and percentage of change in muscle thickness. RESULTS: ICC for USI measurements was greater for the slight abdominal contraction exercise (0,789-0,971, p<0,05) and pelvic floor contraction (0,512-0,972, p<0,05). ICC for EMG measurement was more variable (-1,815-0,966, p<0,05). Significant correlations were observed only during pelvic floor contraction, with a greater CC for the TrA (0,506, p<0,01) followed by IO (0,396, p<0,05). CONCLUSIONS: Surface EMG may still be a valuable tool in measuring muscle activity, but does not seem to accurately measure the activity of deep muscles such as the TrA. When measuring the activity of the deep abdominal muscle, USI and fine wire EMG should be preferred.
