“Que desenho, que desígnio traça a tua mão?” escreveu Alexandre O’Neil em 1951, por ocasião da exposição de José Maria Lima de Freitasrealizada nesse ano, na cidade do Porto. Esta investigação procura responder a estas questões e tem por objetivo primeiro, compreender a importância do lugar do desenho e da ilustração no Design Gráfico em Portugal, nas décadas que se imediatamente se seguem a 1940, períodos marcados pela Segunda Guerra Mundial e pela nova conjuntura saída doPós-Guerra. Toma-se como estudo de caso a obra gráfica de Lima de Freitas, pela exemplaridade de um tempo e de um modo em que emergiram duas fortes correntes artísticas, o neorrealismo e o surrealismo. Pretende-se demonstrar que Lima de Freitas, não obstante nos seus desenhos e ilustrações se encontrarem influências de diferentes correntes artísticas, ilustrou utilizando um conjunto de versões livres, de variações, de acordo com os temas latentes nos poemas ou nos textos, e sobre as afinidades que em si eles encerram. Como ilustrador, atividade que desenvolveu e aperfeiçoou ao longo de trinta anos, iluminando com mestria alguns dos maiores e mais notáveis escritores nacionais e internacionais, soube adaptar e interpretar de modo expressivo cada autor, procurando sistematicamente a inserção na escrita dos diferentes tempos e respetivos criadores. Em virtude da multiplicidade do legado de Lima de Freitas, procedeu-se ao levantamento e à catalogação dos livros com ilustrações da sua autoria— inventário bibliográfico que reúne a iconografia mais significativa de cada uma das edições ilustradas —, à revisão da literatura e a testemunhos, permitindo reconhecer a poligrafia onde se encontra um dos sentidos fundamentais da sua obra, a de pensador da imagem. Tendo compreendido a importância do lugar de destaque que o design, o desenho e a ilustração ocupam na obra de Lima de Freitas, torna-se imperativo a sua compilação e divulgação através de projeto editorial, contribuindo assim para o enriquecimento do património das artes em Portugal.
"When drawing, what is your hand’s intention?" wrote Alexandre O'Neil in 1951, on the occasion of the exhibition of José Maria Lima de Freitas, held that year in the city of Porto. This investigation seeks to answer these questions and its main goal is to understand the importance of the drawing and illustration’s place in Graphic Design in Portugal, in the decades immediately following 1940, periods marked by the Second World War and the new conjuncture exit from the Post-War. As a case study, lima de Freitas' graphic work is taken, due to the exemplarity of a time and in a way in which two strong artistic currents emerged, neorealism and surrealism. It is intended to demonstrate that Lima de Freitas, although in his drawings and illustrations there are also some influences of artistic currents over time, illustrated using a set of free versions, variations, according to the latent themes in poems or texts, and on the affinities that they contain in them. As an illustrator, an activity which he developed and perfected for thirty years, he illustrated with expertise some of the biggest and most remarkable Portuguese and foreign writers. He expressively adapted and interpreted each author, always finding the perfect insertion in the writing of different periods of time and respective creators. Given the multiplicity of Lima de Freitas´s legacy, the books with his illustrations were identified and catalogued. —A bibliographical inventory that brings together the most significant images for each of his illustrated works —, literature review and the interviews, allowing for the recognition of the polygraphy where one of the fundamental aspects of his work can be found,the image thinker.
