Abstract(s)
Southeast Asia's Vietnam has a rich and intricate history that underwent significant
transformations from 1986 to 2000. The Human Development Index (HDI) came to be a
crucial measure of nations' progress and overall well-being in recent decades. This
dissertation delves into the correlation between Vietnam's five-year development plans
from 1986 to 2000 and the evolution of the HDI in Vietnam. The study takes inspiration
from Amartya Sen's "capability approach" to assess human welfare. The analysis will
examine Vietnam's Five-Year Plan during the aforementioned period, as well as the
historical events that influenced Vietnam's policies from a theoretical framework.
This analysis evaluates Vietnam's developmental advancements during a critical time
frame in its history. Through the implementation of a comprehensive methodology,
essential HDI metrics (life expectancy, educational attainment, and income distribution)
will be assessed. The objective is to better understand the accomplishments, obstacles,
and fundamental patterns that have influenced the nation's developmental pursuits.
Based on careful analysis of pertinent statistical data and a thorough review of the
literature, it can be observed that Vietnam's HDI has shown an upward trend over the
years. Despite particular challenges, this positive progress can be attributed to the
government's commendable policies and development plans.
