Práticas no tratamento de doenças reprodutivas em bovinos face à evidência atual

As doenças reprodutivas em bovinos, nomeadamente de aptidão leiteira, assumem uma
grande importância nas explorações bovinas, por afectarem a qualidade e o grau de
produtividade das explorações, bem como a sua consequente rentabilidade económica. Assim,
é imperativo procurar realizar o melhor maneio possível nestes animais de forma a prevenir
ao máximo a ocorrência destas doenças e gerir bem o tratamento a adoptar quando aparecem
estes problemas.
Com base neste tema, surgiu a ideia de elaborar um estudo que contemplasse as práticas
realizadas no maneio deste gado e seus tratamentos, comparando posteriormente esse trabalho
com aquilo que a literatura científica aponta como indicado para cada caso.
Construiu-se para este efeito um inquérito, em papel e online, dirigido a médicos veterinários
e a produtores que lidam com estes problemas, onde se procurou aferir as opções que tomam
quando estas surgem, desde quando é solicitado o auxílio veterinário, a manobras obstétricas,
a medidas de prevenção e controlo e aos fármacos normalmente utilizados.
Daqui registou-se uma grande variedade de abordagens nas mais variadas situações, desde
diferentes preocupações e cuidados na hora do parto, como os fármacos utilizados e os
diferentes tratamentos para as doenças em estudo. Verificaram-se diferenças significativas
nomeadamente entre produtores do sector leiteiro e do aleitante em tratamento de situações
como metrites, ou entre médicos veterinários nacionais e estrangeiros em casos de quistos
ováricos. Em regra geral, o trabalho provou que a decisão terapêutica tem divergências entre
os inquiridos, não só nos fármacos utilizados, bem como nas medidas de controlo e estratégias
de prevenção para estas doenças. Além disso, foi possível concluir que o médico veterinário
pode assumir um papel muito importante na evolução da abordagem dos produtores perante
este tema, que são quem mais tem a progredir.
ABSTRACT - Practices in the treatment of reproductive diseases in cattle given the current evidence - Reproductive diseases in dairy cattle are of great importance in the daily activities of a cattle farm, since they affect productivity and, therefore, economic viability. Thus, it is imperative to manage cattle farms the best way possible in order to prevent this type of diseases, but also know how to handle diseases when they do appear. Therefore the purpose of this study was to identify overall practices and procedures aimed to prevent and treat diseases in cattle farms, comparing them to the evidence-based best practices, according to literature. A survey aiming veterinarians and cattle farmers was performed, both online and in paper versions. On this survey, issues related to reproductive management were approached, such as preventive measures for certain reproductive conditions, the use and choice of medicines and when to ask for veterinary help. A great variety of answers were observed, concerning different situations such as procedures at calving or choice of medicines for each specific condition. Dairy farmers’ answers were significantly different from those beef cattle, specifically regarding treatment of metritis, and the answers also differed significantly between Portuguese and foreign veterinarians, in the matter of ovarian cysts’ approach. Overall, significant differences regarding general practice decisions in cattle farms were perceived and this survey allowed the understanding of the role of the veterinary doctor in dealing with reproductive and obstetric problems.
