Qualidade de vida em estruturas residenciais para pessoas idosas o estudo de caso da Mansão de Santa Maria de Marvila

O envelhecimento é um fenómeno das sociedades contemporâneas desenvolvidas. O aumento da longevidade remete para a (re) formulação e implementação de políticas promotoras de respostas novas e diversificadas para as necessidades da Pessoa Idosa e respetivos familiares, também assentes na promoção da Qualidade de Vida (QdV) da Pessoa Idosa. Com este estudo, propomo-nos conhecer, compreender e avaliar a QdV de Pessoas Idosas em Estrutura Residencial para Pessoas Idosas (ERPI).
Com uma abordagem metodológica interacionista e construtivista, face a necessidade de compreensão de realidades simbólicas, optámos por uma matriz qualitativa assente no estudo de caso da Mansão de Santa Maria de Marvila (MSMM). Complementarmente, com o recurso a uma abordagem quantitativa, recorremos às escalas específicas à avaliação da QdV da Pessoa Idosa, bem como à avaliação do grau de satisfação relativamente aos serviços prestados na resposta social.
É enfatizada a natureza multidimensional e subjetiva da QdV, sendo para os inquiridos relevante a satisfação relativamente à saúde geral, ao controlo sobre a própria vida, a maneira como é ocupado o dia-a-dia, atividades e a qualidade do ambiente, os recursos económicos e as relações familiares. Foi ainda observável a associação da qualidade das instalações e dos serviços à tomada de decisões políticas atuais, face a situação de crise económica e financeira do País. Face a estas representações, é comum o recurso a estratégias de adaptação e resiliência, que se refletem na QdV dos inquiridos.
É assim evidenciada a necessidade de políticas e respostas sociais que acompanhem os ciclos de vida familiar e o processo de envelhecimento. Adicionalmente, são igualmente necessários critérios de qualidade e rigor de uma prestação de cuidados (mais) centrada na pessoa e holística, proporcionando também a manutenção ou devolução do poder de decisão e garantia de bem-estar da Pessoa Idosa
Ageing is a phenomenon of the contemporary developed societies. The increase in longevity points us towards the (re) formulation and implementation of policies that promote new and diverse answers to the needs of the Elderly and relatives, based on the promotion of Quality of Life (QoL) in Nursing Homes for the Elderly. With this study, we propose to understand and evaluate the QoL of the elderly in Nursing Homes. Considering a methodological interactional and constructivist approach, facing the necessity of comprehension of symbolic realities, we opted for a qualitative matrix based on the “Mansão de Santa Maria de Marvila (MSMM)” case study. Additionally, and resorting to a quantitative approach, we applied specific scales for the evaluation of the elderly’s QoL, as well as for the evaluation of satisfaction concerning the services provided. The multidimensional and subjetive nature of QoL is emphasized, as the perception and satisfaction in regard to general health, control of their own lives, the manner how daily routine is carried out, activities and environment quality, economical resources and family relationships are relevant aspects. In this context, we can observe the association between quality of the premises and services provided and the current political decisions, in view of the situation of economic and financial crisis of the country. Due to these representations, the resource to adaptation and resilience strategies assumes special importance, which in turn is reflected on the enquired’s QoL. Therefore, the necessity of public policies and social care, which accompanies the families’ life cycles and the ageing process, is highlighted. In addition, it is equally important to develop a board of quality and precision of care provision criteria, (more) centered on the person and holistic, providing the maintenance or devolution of decision and guarantee of the elderly people’s QoL
